1144137 Gnr Tom Marshall, 68th Field Regiment Royal Artillery, 10th Indian Division.
Tom was born in the small rural village of Fulstow in Lincolnshire. He was the youngest son of Thomas and Clara Marshall and worked on the family farm with two older brothers and twin sisters.
As the third son, Tom didn't qualify for the Reserved Occupation status as a farmer and was consequently called up. After training, he was posted to the Middle East and then onto Italy in 1943. Tom was attached to a Battery HQ as a Signaller.
Tom's Regiment was deployed to the Tiber Valley area, providing fire support and laying smoke for the infantry and armoured units. The enemy artillery was also very active and Tom was killed by enemy fire on 21 July 1944, aged 22.
Tom was originally laid to rest in a battlefield cemetery but he is now cared for by the CWGC at the beautiful Assisi cemetery.
Tom's older brothers, Roy and Eric, served in the local home guard unit. Of his twin sisters, Dorothy served as a WAAF and Betty as a Nurse in London and experienced the "Blitz".
Tom is also remembered on the war memorial in Fulstow, along with all the 15 Fulstow villagers, who all made the ultimate sacrifice for their country in both World Wars.
