Born on 22 March 1896 at Riverton, South Australia, Edwin Charles Gray was the son of Walter and Ada Ruth Gray (née Sarre).
Edwin was the third of seven children. His siblings were Alfred James, Alice Elvina, Dorothy Emily, Herbert Henry, Ruth Turner, and Walter Sarre.
Edwin enlisted on 6 June 1915 at Keswick, South Australia. His occupation was recorded as a chauffeur mechanic. His service record shows that he was five feet five and three-quarter inches tall and weighed 119 lbs. He had brown eyes, brown hair, a fresh complexion, and his religion was recorded as Church of England.
Edwin was killed in action on Thursday, 20 July 1916, during the Battle of the Somme, aged 20 years. As his remains were not originally identified, he was commemorated on the V.C. Corner Cemetery Memorial, Fromelles, Nord, France.

Through modern identification techniques, Edwin's remains were subsequently positively identified. On 20 July 2023, a rededication ceremony took place at Pheasant Wood Military Cemetery, Fromelles, Nord, France. The CWGC has since replaced his Unknown Soldier headstone to reflect his newly confirmed identity.
