Private Robert Young , Service No 14611 of the Highland Light Infantry, 16th Battalion, Glasgow.

Robert Anderson Young was born on 05/08/1886 in the Gorbals area of Glasgow, Scotland. He was the oldest son of John Morris Young and Elizabeth Young (nee Mitchell). He had 5 surviving siblings Jane, Alfred, Margaret, Anne and James. Robert was employed as a foundry labourer and a Public Baths Stoker before enlisting for service in 1915 during World War 1. Robert married Sarah McGhie on 12/03/1915 in the United Free Church.

His unit went to France on 23/11/1915 where he was involved in actions on the Western Front in France and Flanders.

Robert was killed in action on 16/08/1916 near Cambrin, France. At this time the Battle of the Somme was in full force, to the south. He was buried at the Cambrin Churchyard Extension, which was 800m from the front line. His age at death is recorded as 28 although he was actually age 30.

His hat was the only item returned to his widow. He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory Medals. His name is remembered with honour in the Scottish National War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle.
