From the Ardennes to crossing the Rhine
With the failure of their Ardennes Offensive at the Battle of the Bulge, German forces retreated back towards the Siegfried Line on the Dutch-German border. By March 1945, after bitter fighting across the border and in the nearby forests, the Allies had pushed the Germans back over the River Rhine. Operation Plunder and its airborne component Operation Varsity gave the Allies a bridgehead on the eastern bank of the Rhine ready for the final push into Nazi Germany.
