John was educated at Wrekin College, Shropshire, and was the son of John Robertson Knott & Isabella Knott of Lydart, Monmouthshire, Wales.
He served with the Burma Army Service Corps, part of the British Fourteenth Army out in the Far East. He was killed on Friday 5 June 1942 aged 31 years and lies within Ranchi War Cemetery, India.
