Flight Lieutenant William Henry Rhodes-Moorhouse

William Henry Rhodes-Moorhouse was born on 4th March 1914 in London to William Barnard Rhodes-Moorhouse (whose Story is also featured in For Evermore) and Linda Beatrice (née Morrit). William was educated at Eton College, where he was able to obtain his pilot's licence aged 17.

In October 1933, William inherited his father's estate of over £250,000 (today worth £14.5m) and on 15th September 1936 at Marylebone, he married Amalia Demetriadi, a film star.

In 1937 he joined the RAF, flying Bristol Blenheims with 601 Sqn, and at the start of the Second World War, the squadron was based at Biggin Hill but was withdrawn to Tangmere on 17 June 1940.

In July, William flew in the Battle of Britain against the Luftwaffe attacks over the Channel and the south coast and shared in the destruction of Dornier 17s on 7th July and 11th July. He also claimed a Ju88 and shared another on 16th July.

He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in late July 1940.

There were several more “kills” during the Battle but on 6th September, 601 Sqn was engaged above Tunbridge Wells, and William's Hurricane was shot down. It crashed near High Brooms railway viaduct and William was killed instantly.

He was buried alongside his father in a private cemetery in the grounds of his family's former home, Parnham House in Dorset, near Beaminster.
