Flight Sergeant 1394555 Kenneth Williams of 429 (RCAF) Squadron was born 1922, the son of John and Lily Williams of “Gwynfa”, Northiam, Sussex.
Following training, Kenneth was posted to 429 (RCAF) Squadron, equipped with the Handley Page Halifax II, at Leeming, Yorkshire.
On the night of the 8th/9th of October,1943, Bomber Command despatched 504 aircraft to attack Hannover. Kenneth was flying in Halifax JD323 AL-S and took off from Leeming at 22.45 hours. A diversionary raid on Bremen had taken German nightfighters away from the main target and so most of the bombers had dropped their bombs before the fighters arrived back over Hannover.
The RAF lost thirty-five aircraft on this raid, one of which was JD323 which crashed at 01.50 at Siebenhofen, south west of Blomberg, the cause of its loss is uncertain.
All of the crew were killed and they are buried in the Reichswald Forest Cemetery.
Kenneth is remembered in Northiam Cemetery on the grave of his father, a school master who died in 1945.
[His brother Sergeant (Pilot) 658217 Ronald Williams of 7 (P)AFU ((Pilot) Advanced Flying Unit)] died in a flying accident on the 2nd of February 1943
