At Lydd on the 11th of September 1940, he was accidentally shot by a fellow soldier. The Folkestone, Hythe, Sandgate and Cheriton Herald for the 21st of September reports upon his inquest at “A South Eastern Town” into his death under the column heading:

“Killed by a comrade’s shot”

'Evidence of identification was given by Colour Sergeant Kincaid and it was stated that the deceased was married and resided at 44, Shacklegate Lane, Teddington. Evidence showed that the deceased was with a party (I.e a group) and Fusilier Ball was getting up when his rifle was accidentally discharged, the bullet passed through the back of the deceased’s head, causing instantaneous death. A verdict of death by misadventure was returned. The funeral with military honours was held at Lydd Cemetery on the 16th of September.'
