My mum's father, Lieutenant Arthur Winterhalder, was killed when his tank was ambushed on the outskirts of Caen on the afternoon of D-day.
He had earlier come ashore on Sword beach, where there was a great deal of traffic confusion earlier in the day.
He was 21 years old and had already been fighting in North Africa with his regiment, the Staffordshire Yeomanry.
He is buried in Ranville cemetery, not far from Pegasus Bridge.
My mum was born in London the following January and over the last 80 years she visited his grave with her own mum, Violet, who never remarried.
As a family, we have made the journey to Ranville each year and seen the way it has always been looked after with love and care.
We will forever visit my grandfather's grave with my own daughter, where she will continue to do so as she grows up.
