My great granduncle Herbert Paternoster was born on 2 November 1918 in Edinburgh, Scotland the son of Reginald Esau Paternoster and Mary Ann Munton. The family moved back down to Kent where they were originally from and Bert spent rest of his childhood there.
Around 1936, Bert joined army and enlisted in Royal Artillery and was posted to 9 Heavy Regiment RA which was based at Changi, Singapore in September 1938 and in December 1940 it became 9 Coast Regiment and Bert was coast gunner.
Bert took part in Battle of Singapore and was captured on 15 February 1942 and became a Prisoner of War. He left for Changi on 18 October 1942 and became one of Gunners 600 and had to help build airstrip on Ballale Island. He was killed on 5 March 1943 with 517 other gunners by Japanese.
He lies buried at Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea at Bomana War Cemetery.
