LANCE CORPORALSAMUEL MATTHEWS Service Number: T1/SR/35, Army Service Corps, 309th Horse Transport Coy. 

Died 31 March 1917. Grave ref L. CE. 288.

Samuel was born in Dalton in Furness in 1857! In 1878, he enlisted in the 2/4th Foot - the Kings own - number 11 brigade/1281 serving in the Zulu war in 1879 and earning the campaign medal with clasp. He was later transferred to the York and Lancaster Regiment (572). He was discharged in 1890. 

In 1891 he lived at Lords Court, Lancaster working as a masons labourer.

In 1901, he lived at Edward Street and was married to Ellen who died in 1902.

In 1911, he lived at Lawsons Court Lancaster, he had three sons living with him.

He died in Hospital at St Albans of heart failure bought on by bronchitis and emphysema.
