WILLIAM HENRY REEDMAN 1919-1944

Son of DAVID and ELIZA, Lance Corporal, Seaforth Highlanders, 6th Bn.,'4860593', Captured 18 Oct 1944 - Minturno

At the battle of Minturno, 6 Seaforth Highlanders were sent in after 2 Royal Scots Fusiliers. They were ferried across the river by the men of 2 Northamptonshire Regiment only to be greeted by machine gun fire, mortars and artillery shells. Their losses were very heavy and many prisoners were taken, including the thirty-nine men who later found themselves on a POW train, one of them being William.

On 28 January 1944 the United States Air Force bombed a POW train on a bridge near Allerona, Italy. It was carrying Allied servicemen from PG Camp 54, Fara in Sabina, to Germany.

Of these, sixteen were killed outright including William and they are remembered on the War Memorial at Cassino. Twenty-one men, some of whom had been recaptured and others who had been discharged from the hospital in Orvieto, were sent on to camps in Germany
