Lance Corporal William Nield, L/6454, 17th Lancers (Duke of Cambridge's Own)

William was born in 1884, in Sheffield, to Walter a photographic apparatus maker and Mary, he had three brothers and five sisters, and the family were living in Albert Rd, Heeley.
By 1901, his mother was a widow and the family have moved to 599 Abbeydake Rd, Ecclesall, Bierlow, and William is employed as a law stationer’s assistant.
He enlisted in the 17th Lancers and was shown serving in India in 1911.
On mobilisation from the reserve he was attached to the 2nd Life Guards arriving in France in October 1914, he would be killed in action in Belgium on 29th October.
William is remembered on the Menin Gate, Panel 5, Ypres.
