LANCE SERJEANT WILLIAM JAMES FREDERICK RAY Service Number: 134 King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) "A" Coy. 1st/5th Bn. Died 05 November 1915 Age 30 years old H. CE. 56. son of James and Mary Agnes Ray; husband of Sarah Ann Ray, of 26. Denmark St., The Marsh, Lancaster. Born at Kendal, Westmorland.

Born in Kendal in 1885, by 1911 William was a tinsmith at Williamsons Line Mill Lancaster.

A pre war member of the 1/5th Kings own ,he went to France in February 1914.

Gassed in the infamous 6 day period of 23-29th April 1915, when there was no anti gas protection for the soldiers, and the 1/5th lost 52 killed and 169 wounded, he was invalided home and died on 5 November of that year.

Married in 1905 he had no Children. William was awarded a 1915 star trio.

His pension record states he died from an abscess on the liver bought on by Active service
