Arthur Amyot Steward was born in Salisbury on the 14th July 1882, his parents were The Rev Edward Steward and Margaret Knyvet Steward. He was educated at Wellington College in Berkshire and Magdalen College, Oxford, served in the Norfolk Militia in the Boer War, worked as a Civil Servant in South Africa and studied at Wells Theological College from 1911 to 1912. On the 8th June 1912 he married Miriam Agnes Carver and they had three children, Lavinia in 1913, Joan in 1915 and Aveuly in 1916.

Arthur initially enlisted with the Royal Field Artillery but transferred to the 2nd Balloon Wing of the RFC. He was killed in action on the 6th October 1917. At the time his wife and children were living at The Moot, Downton, Salisbury.

He is buried at Duhallow A.D.S. Cemetery in Belgium.
