Lieutenant Frederic William Joseph MacDonald Miller was the son of Sir William Frederic Miller, 5th Baronet Miller, of Glenlee, Kirkcudbrightshire and Mary Augusta Miller (nee Manning).
Lieutenant Miller was part of the aristocracy and pre-war spent his time travelling, steeple jump racing, playing polo, athletics and skiing. He was also a member of the Bachelors club in London.
He attended the Royal Military College, Sandhurst and was gazetted to the Grenadier Guards in February 1912.
He was made a Lieutenant in August 1914 with the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards.
On 23rd October 1914 Lieutenant Miller was in the front line trenches near St Julian when he was killed by a high-explosive shell. He was buried close to the battlefield but his grave was subsequently lost and he is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. He was 22 years of age when he died.
