Heneage Frank Stopford was born in Redhill in Surrey, the son of James Sidney Stopford and Katherine Mary Stopford (née Waller).

In 1908, he married Margaret Amelia Kennedy who was aunt of the broadcaster Ludovic Kennedy and by 1911 the couple were in Woolwich.

Heneage served with the Royal Field Artillery and was 39 years old when he was killed in action on the 15th September 1916.

His widow lived for a time with her brother Edward Kennedy at Denyears in Farringdon.

Heneage’s service entitled him to the 1914 Star and the British War and Victory Medals. Major Heneage Frank Stopford is buried in the Bulls Road Cemetery, Flers in France - Grave III.L.13.
