John was the son of John William Charlton & Gwendoline Mary Owen Charlton of Kelsterton, Flintshire, North Wales and was educated at Wrekin College, Shropshire.

He served with the 11 (Honourable Artillery Company) Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery in North Africa.

His regiment was equipped with 25-pounder guns and, re-equipped with the M7 Priest self-propelled gun, in the second 'Battle of El Alamein'.

John was the second Old Wrekinian to be killed in action on Friday 29 May 1942 and to be buried within Knightsbridge War Cemetery, Acroma, Libya. He was 35 years old at the time of his death.
