Pilot Officer 108955 Anthony Merritt, aged 20, was the son of Bertram Thomas Barnett and Phyllis Merritt. At the time of his death on the 4th of July 1942 he was serving in North Africa with 33 Squadron, flying Hurricane IIc fighters from the desert airfield LG154.

Whilst at about 1000 feet, shortly after leaving the airfield, his aircraft, Hurricane BE469, was bounced by a pair of Italian Macchi MC202 fighters and shot down. He has no known grave and is remembered on the Alamein Memorial as well as on a tablet within the church, placed by his parents, his brother and two sisters.
