Alfred James Banyard was the son of James and Margaret Frances Banyard of 188, Penton Place, Manor Place, Walworth, London. He had 8 brothers and sisters.

He joined the 1st Battalion of the Coldstream Guards during the war on 13th September 1914 and was on the Somme during the offensive in 1916. He was declared missing and presumed killed in action (near Lesboeufs) on September 15th 1916.

His mother learned he was missing on 1st November 1916, and contacted the International Committee of the Red Cross re him possibly being a PoW. On 21st November, they replied they had no news about her son.

His body was found only on February 1932 south west to the Guard’s cemetery, Lesboeufs. He could be identified because he was found with his ID, his titles, a ring engraved “J.B.” and 2 fountains pens. He is now commemorated at Thiepval Franco-British cemetery, grave II. K. 15.
