Arthur was born in 1900 to William and Elizabeth Matthews in Ellisfield, Hampshire. Elizabeth had been born in Winchfield, near Hartley Wintney.
Arthur served in the 10th Battalion of the Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) and was killed on 29th September 1918 . He is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial and on the War Memorial in Hartley Wintney along with his brother Alfred who had died on the 9th September 1917.
