Bernard was born in 31st Dec 1884 in Brightside, Yorkshire, his father, William a iron planer and Francis Harriet, he had six brothers, by 1901 Bernard was also working as a iron planer and the family are living at 94 Wynyard Rd, Wadsley, Ecclesfield.
Bernard enlisted in the 17th Lancers and was shown serving with the Regiment in India in 1911.
He was mobilised and attached to the 2nd Life Guards, and he would be killed in action on the 30th October 1914 at the age of 32, and is remembered on the Menin Gate, Panel 5, Ypres.
On the 30th of October 1914 whilst defending Ypres from German attacks the 7th Cavalry Brigade part of the 3rd Cavalry Division comprising the 3 Household Cavalry regiments Royal Horse Guards, 1st and 2nd Lifeguards were heavily shelled.
