Donald was born on 5 November 1895 at East End, Kingussie. He was the eldest son of John Shand Stewart and Sarah Stewart (m.s. Macdonald). Donald’s parents were married on 16 December 1892 at Newtonmore. From Lossiemouth, John Shand Stewart, his father, 21, was a Joiner at time of his marriage. His mother, Sarah, 21, was a domestic servant from Newtonmore.

The 1901 and the 1911 Census show Donald living with his parents in High Street, Kingussie. In 1911 Donald was 15 and a Message Boy (Butcher).

Donald had two younger brothers and one older and one younger sister.

His parents lived at “Bruach Ville,” Newtonmore at the time of his death.

War Record: Donald travelled to France on 19 February 1915 and was wounded at the Battle of Loos. He was evacuated but died of wounds on 28 September 1915. He was buried at Noeux-Les-Mines Communal Cemetery.
