Private 6144332 Frank Thomas Rice, 1st/6th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment was born 1919 in Croydon, one of three children, the son of Thomas Rice (1876 to 1953) and Mabel Clarke (1888 to 1968).
Before war broke out, Frank had a narrow escape when he collided on his bike with two lorries, as reported in the Croydon Times and Surrey Mail for the 15th of April, 1939.
The collision occurred outside Croydon Parish Church. Frank of Bates Crescent, Waddon, was taken to Croydon General Hospital suffering cuts to his right hand but was not detained. The two lorries were badly damaged.
After enlisting, Frank served in France and Belgium 1939/1940. He died on the 7th of June 1940.
