6022332 Private Frederick James Cummings was the son of George and Eleanor Jane Cummings of Canning Town, Essex. He served with the 1st Battalion of the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regt).

He was killed on the 26 February 1944 at Anzio in Italy, aged 24. Anzio was one of the most ferocious battles of the Second World War and was launched on 22 January 1944. The aim was a bold attempt to outflank the German defences and take Rome. After a tense and hard battle the stalemate was broken in May and Rome finally fell in June 1944.

Private Cummings is buried in Beach Head War Cemetery, Anzio, close to a member of his Battalion who died the same day.  The cemetery contains 2317 casualties and is in a peaceful location surrounded by trees. The Personal Inscription on his headstone reads "THO' TAKEN BEYOND OUR REACH MAY YOUR SOUL, DEAR SON FOR EVER REST IN PEACE. MUM AND DAD."
