Born in December 1886, Private 7/389773 Horace John Baker was the brother of Sapper 203 Arthur Stanley Baker, who also died and is buried at Alfriston. Horace was the husband of Maude Baker. He had been a farm worker from the age of fourteen until he enlisted into the Army Service Corps at Chichester. He then served with 348th Motor Transport Company. Originally his service number was G.5833.

He died at Swindon, Wiltshire, on the 10th January 1918 through unknown causes.
