Owen was born about 1882 in Birmingham, to Joseph and Mary, Owen had one brother and one sister, in 1901 the family are living at 4 Muir St, Birmingham, and Owen aged 19 was working as a hairdresser, by 1911 he had joined the 17th Lancers in India.
He arrived in France with the 2nd Life Guards after mobilisation from the reserve on the 6th October 1914. He was killed in action on the 31st October 1914 and is remembered on the Menin Gate, panel 5, Ypres.
On the 30th/31st of October 1914 whilst defending Ypres from German attacks the 7th Cavalry Brigade part of the 3rd Cavalry Division comprising the 3 Household Cavalry regiments Royal Horse Guards, 1st and 2nd Lifeguards were heavily shelled.
