'Life of a son of the Rectory...'

DOB: 31/1/1896. He would attend Campbell college in 1909, where he was in the Rugby 1st XV from 1912 to 1914.

In 1914, he would pass on to Trinity College, Dublin where on the outbreak of war he would be offered a commission as officer in January 1915. He would be posted to 3rd Bn Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers (this being the reserve Bn for the regular Bns).

He would be posted to 7th Bn in the Loos Salient, France in 1916. This extract taken from 7th Bn history.

“The party, when finally Selected for the Scheme (A trench raid), consist of Second Lieutenant H.B.O Mitchell M.C and Second Lieutenant B Watson (recently joined) and 40 other ranks...

…on the withdrawal to British lines the German machine guns opened on 2/Lt Watson followed by field artillery. 2/Lt Watson was mortally wounded by shell fire, and though he was conveyed with all speed to the Aid Post he died following day at Bethune. He was interred in he Battalion Cemetery at Philosophe"
