Sergeant Colin Pryce Edwards

Died 4th February 1941, remembered Alamein Memorial

Sergeant 552554 Colin Pryce Edwards, 45 Squadron, was born the third quarter of 1921 in the Cleobury Mortimer, the son of Pryce Frederick Edwards (1892 to 1970) and Clara Winifred Beddoes (1894 to 1983). The Edwards family had another daughter, Hilda born 1923, died 1926.

At 09.20 on the 4th of February, 1941, four Blenheims of 45 Squadron, flown by Flight Lieutenant Paine, Flight Sergeant Overell, Pilot Officer Collins and Pilot Officer Allen took off from Menastir, Libya, to attack Barce railway station. Finding nothing worthy of attack there, the aircraft attacked motor transport in the Barce - Tocra area.

Sergeant Colin Pryce Edwards was with F/Lt Paine in Blenheim L8538 when the aircraft was attacked and shot down by Italian CR-42 biplane fighters. F/Lt Paine baled out and with the assistance of friendly Senussi tribesmen escaped through the Italian lines and returned to base.

His two crew members Sergeant (Observer) 581288 Harry Cecil Thomas Holmans, Sergeant WOp/AG Colin Pryce Edwards had both been killed in the attack and went down with the aircraft. The British bombers had been attacked by five CR-42s from 368 Squadriglia. The only Blenheim lost was that of F/Lt Paine; the aircraft being shot down by Sottotenente Lauri.

Neither Sergeant Holmans or Sergeant Thomas have a known grave and both are remembered on the Alamein Memorial.

Colin Pryce Edwards is also remembered in Milson (St George) Church, Shropshire.
