
Sergeant (W.Op/AG) 643045 Albert Ernest Everest 77 Squadron RAF, was born 1917 at Cranbrook, one of two children, the sons of William George Everest (1894 to 1972) and Helen Smith (1894 to 1960).
On the night of the 12th/13th of November 1940 he took off from Topcliffe in Whitley V T4208 “T” to bomb the synthetic oil plant at Wesseling. A message was received that the aircraft was returning without attacking the target but failed to return. The squadron despatched nine aircraft to the target and T4208 was the only Whitley lost.
The aircraft had been shot down at 04.00 and crashed at Lettele near Deventer, Holland.
P/O 42779 Geoffrey Maurice Wiltshear was taken prisoner of war and held at Stalag Luft III, Sagan and Belaria; P/O 82688 Geoffrey Henocq (P) aged 23, Sgt 581390 Herbert Hutchinson (Obs), Sgt A E G Everest, and Sgt 971171 Alexander Duff Wilson (W/Op), aged 24 were all killed and buried in Amsterdam New Eastern Cemetery.
Albert is remembered in Tenterden Cemetery upon the grave of his brother William who was also lost on active service.
