Born on 13 November 1889 in Litherland, Lancashire, Edward John Lightfoot, known as Teddy, was a professional football player best known for his time at Tottenham Hotspur.
Teddy began his playing career in Lancashire with local side Harrowby before moving to Southport Central. At Southport, he gained a reputation as one of the Lancashire Combination League’s top players and was soon on Spurs’ radar.
He made the move to the London club in May 1910. He was soon a regular in the reserve team but had to wait until 14 October 1911 for his senior debut. After that, he made 66 full appearances in league and cup competitions as a left half, netting two goals.
Teddy made 25 appearances for Spurs in the 1914/1915 season as the team was missing several first-teamers due to military service. After the season ended, Teddy returned to Lancashire and Southport Central.
In 1916, Teddy enlisted in the Royal Garrison Artillery. While in the military, he played for his unit and army sides, including several games at Fulwood Barracks in Preston, Lancashire.
By mid-1918, Teddy had been promoted to Sergeant and was serving to the 1st Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery.
We do not know the full details of Teddy’s military service but we do know he was transferred to 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station in Esquelbecq where he died of unknown causes on 20 July 1918, aged 30.
Teddy is buried in Esquelbecq Military Cemetery.
