Signalman 2589222 Henry William Hills, Eighth Army Signals, was born in 1916, the son of William Percy and Ethel Alice Hills. He died at 34 Parkhurst Road, on the 1st of January 1946 at the age of 29; his home address was given as 17 Edinburgh Road Bexhill. His probate records his estate of £319-5-7d going to Ethel Ashdown, wife of William Percy Ashdown.
Henry had been found dead in the bath of his cousin, Mrs Violet Hendy, who found him when she returned from shopping. An inquest was held and it was established that the light in the geyser had been blown out by the breeze coming through the open window, allowing gas to come direct into what was a very small bathroom. Henry could not have noticed the problem and was eventually overcome by the gas, passed out and died. A verdict of accidental death by coal gas poisoning was given. Nobody was to blame.
Henry is buried with his parents; William died on the 19th of August 1950, aged 72 and Ethel died on the 22nd of February 1972 at the age of 88. His funeral was well attended with the Reverend Frank Walker conducting the service. A local paper noted Henry had recently been released from the army and had resided in Bexhill since 1919 and was a member of the local athletics club.
