William John "Shorty" Kaufman grew up on Hohner Ave in Kitchener Ontario. He was a great friend of my grandparents who were still dating at the time, Roy Break and Ada Crispen.
He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in the 420 Snowy Owl Squadron based in the Midlands, England. His Headley Page Hampton with all crew (P/O W.D. Frost, W/O R.R. Stewart, Sgt A.J. Greenaway (RAF)) were shot down over the North Sea off the coast of Holland on the early morning of August 1st, 1942.
They were returning from a bombing run over Duesseldorf Germany. It was to be their last mission in the Hampton before they were to move over to the Lancaster bombers. There were no survivors.
